The Parent Resource Center is tasked with cultivating and expanding the relationship between parents and the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS).
To this end, three Parent Resource Centers (PRC) are being created in Wards 1 (Meyer ES), 7 (Shadd ES) and 8 (McGogney ES). The PRCs will provide parents with training and programming focused on:
1. raising awareness about the responsibilities of, and services provided by, DCPS
2. understanding the curriculum for each grade (pre-K thru 12th)
3. becoming advocates in and for schools;
4. enhancing effective communication between schools and families; and
5. Raising student achievement by providing parents/guardians with the tools and information they need to help students succeed.
The Outreach Specialist will be responsible for working directly with the DCPS parent/guardian community to recruit parents to participate in programming and services offered by the DCPS Parent Resource Center (PRC). Specifically, the Outreach Specialist will spend most of their time in the field informing the community about the PRCs, gathering information about issues building relationships with school administrators and staff, learning about available programs, resources and information that will address parent/guardian needs and sharing information about parent engagement. The Outreach Specialist also will participate in the design and implementation of programming that meets the goals of the PRC.
The Outreach Specialist will report to the PRC Director.
Duties and Responsibilities:
-Assist in the development of outreach strategies to effectively engage parents/guardians in the activities of the PRCs and the schools.
-Implement an effective outreach campaign.
-Develop collaborative relationships with parents/guardians, school personnel, community leaders and activists and others.
-Act as an advocate and liaison among schools, parents, and the community.
-Assist in the creation of a knowledge base of available resources inside and outside the school system that support parents/guardians.
-Maintain direct contact with principals, leaders, teachers and counselors.
-Provide support and technical assistance to schools on how to improve family and community engagement.
-Assist in the development of programming and training that is parent/guardian-centric.
-Assist in the recruitment and training of volunteers.
-Develop and implement standard operating procedures and services to families.
-Maintain appropriate records of clients and identified needs, including filing field reports and contact logs.
-Perform other duties as requested by the PRC Director.
Qualifications:
-Minimum of 2 years of college credit or an Associates Degree or equivalent experience.
-Ability to create and maintain strong community collaborations.
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
-Excellent customer service skills.
-Energetic and enthusiastic with strong interpersonal skills.
-Ability to work with various parent and community groups across the Ward.
-Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with a variety of groups and community based organizations, parents/guardians, community leaders, advocates, teachers, principals and others.
-Ability to manage multiple constituencies.
-Ability to work a varied work schedule, including evenings and weekends.
The position is subject to D.C. residency preference.
Preferred:
-Experience in working in a start-up organization.
-Ability to speak a non-English language and/or willingness to learn.
-Experience engaging parents/guardians, families, and community members in educational, parent, community, and/or similar organizations effectively.
