Bilingual Community Health Educator

JOB SUMMARY:
Develops and implements community outreach and sexual and reproductive health education programs throughout the District, Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties, Maryland and Northern Virginia. Creates innovative and flexible models of learning. Coordinates a multifaceted pregnancy prevention and reproductive health program for female and male adolescents, adults and professionals. Works collaboratively with community based organizations, churches and schools to enhance existing program services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Implements sexuality and reproductive health education programs targeted towards the community focusing on pregnancy prevention, abstinence, responsible, sexuality, cultural awareness, values and goal identification, self-esteem building and good citizenship.
2. Designs and conducts health education workshops for area youth based at public and private schools, faith-based groups and community based organizations.
3. Assists and works closely with the RAISE Program and Teen Clinic.
4. Designs and conducts health education workshops for area adults including parents.
5. Encourages Latino youth to recognize their importance and connectedness to their community.
6. Designs and conducts professional trainings for area youth-serving professionals including teachers and guidance counselors, social workers, nurses and others.
7. Creates and prepares monthly records and statistical reports for immediate supervisor and the Office of Development.
8. Conducts ongoing outreach to promote PPMW programs and services and establishes community relationships to maintain program growth and effectiveness.
9. Develops networks of community organizations and attends collaborative meetings and community events.
10. Maintains a good working relationship with Latino community leaders, school principals and church bodies and other prominent leaders.
11. Converts outreach contacts into workshop sites
12. Conducts sexuality education workshops and trainings for community residents, professionals and youth.
13. Coordinates and assists in the recruitment of volunteers to work with the project.
14. Participates in the organization and implementation of special events as required.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
1. BA or BS in human services, public or community health, psychology, or social work preferred.
2. Fluent in Spanish and English
3. Three years experience demonstrated expertise in providing health education, including reproductive health programs.
4. Knowledge of and commitment to family planning issues. Knowledge of the principles and practices of public health, including knowledge of related cultural, social, and economic forces in family and group relationships.
5. Experience developing and updating program curriculum
6. Must have experience working with youth and families, preferably in the Latino communities
7. Community organizing experience and familiarity with the Washington DC metropolitan faith based community helpful.
8. Requires excellent verbal and written communication, listening and interpersonal relationship skills. This must include strong presentation and public speaking skills
9. Ability to effectively work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team, within a diverse environment
10. Additional demonstrated skills must include: strong organizational skills; attention to detail; self motivation, ability to multi-task: plus ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
11. Must be able to travel within and around three state regions (VA, MD, and DC) and must possess valid drivers license (MD, VA or DC)
