TEACHING ASSOCIATE – PT

MISSION
Interstages provides opportunities for early adolescent girls in low-income neighborhoods to discover talents, strengthen & develop skills, and heighten self-awareness, setting the stage for a successful transition into young adulthood.

PROGRAMS
Interstages operates a daily afterschool youth development program for middle school (6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade) girls in Southeast Washington, DC. Two primary components make up Interstages curriculum:

(1) Academic personalization: Upon enrollment, each student meets with Interstages staff to create an individualized set of academic goals, complete with step-by-step plans, benchmarks, and other tools to support successful achievement. Staff members ensure that each student sets appropriate goals and receives the monitoring, intervention, remediation, enrichment and other supports required to enable her to reach her goal, celebrate her success, and start on a new challenge.

(2) Connecting to History through Music: Interstages teaches music in cultural and historical context. Students participate in voice class and studio class, learn to read and write music, practice ear training, and (as capacity allows) have the opportunity to learn an instrument. Each curriculum unit focuses on a musical genre, historical period, and/or world culture, using music as an entry point to explore history, culture, and social issues. Each unit also emphasizes how the theme of study relates to the girls’ lives.
