Executive Director, Hispanic Committee of Virginia

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors.

About the organization: The Hispanic Committee of Virginia is the oldest and largest Hispanic nonprofit organization in Northern Virginia. Last year, the Hispanic Committee provided over 50,000 services to 10,000 clients. We are a private, tax-exempt corporation established in 1967, whose mission is to enable Hispanics to more fully participate in, and thereby contribute to American society.

Programs and services include: information and referral, social services case management, immigration and legal services, home-buying/homeownership, micro-enterprise development, financial literacy education, workforce development, ESL and citizenship classes, and after-school tutoring.

Key Responsibilities:

• Leadership and Vision

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to all organization staff (20-30 employees)
  • Work with the Board of Directors and staff to build long-term strategy as well as short term goals and objectives for the organization
  • Assess overall effectiveness of organization and monitor performance against objectives
  • Create professional environment based on trust and respect

• Community Involvement / External Relations / Fundraising

  • Build relationships with corporate partners and funders, keeping them informed of the organization’s needs, progress and successes.
  • Maintain a clear and on-going understanding of the needs of the Hispanic community and related trends
  • Work to obtain new and diverse funding sources for the organization
  • Oversee fundraising strategy as well as the preparation of new and existing fundraising proposals
  • Direct the agency’s efforts in holding fundraising events

• Operational/Administrative:

  • Oversee the day-to-day business of the organization
  • Present regular, scheduled reports to the Board regarding organization activities, performance, and financial situation
  • Follow and execute policies established by the Board

• Budgeting and Finance o Work closely with the Accounting and Administration Director and the Board Treasurer to ensure that the agency’s financial resources are secure and well managed. This includes budgeting, controls and metrics, audits, etc

• Human Resources: - Work closely with the Accounting/Administration Director to ensure personnel policies of HCV are observed by all staff members - Verify periodically that personnel policies and benefits are in line with market conditions in order to maintain staff morale and retention - Promote use of volunteers to leverage work of staff

• Program Management - Ensure that the existing programs are executed according to the agency’s mission statement, as well as programmatic goals and objectives - Ensure that the required and necessary reports are being submitted on a timely basis to donors, grantors, other pertinent parties and the Board of Directors - Make certain that programs have the necessary funding and resources to work effectively in delivering services to the community - Propose new program activities that the agency can undertake to better serve the community

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in social science, management or related field; advanced degree preferred but not required • Thoroughly bilingual and bicultural; understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of the Hispanic community • Strong staff leadership ability • Proven experience in building relationships with political and community leaders • Preference for demonstrated success in managing a not-for-profit organization; other relevant experience considered • Outstanding work ethic, determination and vision
