Position Description for FT Education Coordinator

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation and the Children’s Aid Society Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program are partnering to deliver an exciting and innovative program to help youth from high-risk settings develop the desire for a productive future by avoiding pregnancy and making responsible decisions. The DC Carrera Trust Program includes (7) fundamental components: Education; Employment; Self-Expression; Lifetime Individual Sports; Family Life and Sexuality Education; Mental Health; and Medical and Dental Care. This program will work with 5th and 6th grade students during school, bi-weekly Saturdays, and summer, and will follow these young people through to high school graduation and beyond.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The DC Carrera Trust Program is seeking an experienced, creative, and highly energetic person to work as a FT Education Coordinator. A key function of this position is to assist in the development and delivery of creative academic curricula for 5th and 6th grade students and to create a learning environment in which every young person can develop their gifts and talents and grow academically. This is accomplished through literacy and math instruction, tutoring, and enrichment centering on meeting DC Public School Standards, improving academic performance and encouraging the pursuit of higher education. This position reports to the Program Coordinator, and works in conjunction with DC Carrera Trust and school staff.

The ideal candidate will have experience and expertise in incorporating technology into a fun educational environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Work with the Program Coordinator and Carrera Trust staff to ensure the fidelity of the program model - all (7) components and program philosophy.
• Lead the planning and implementation of Saturday programming and educational trips as appropriate to provide enhanced learning opportunities.
• Coach component leaders on improving techniques of instruction, effective lesson planning and improving overall program delivery • Develop and disseminate strategies with component leaders to improve student engagement • Develop and implement strategies toward increasing literacy and reading comprehension skills. • Develop linkages with other program components to enhance and reinforce the educational mission.
• Support component leaders in assessment and evaluation of students • Coordinate and supervise part-time group leaders assisting in facilitating educational activities research projects, and data entry for students • Possess knowledge about basic reading/ writing instruction and ways of integrating literacy across the program components • Stay abreast of and educate staff on current research and developments in education. • Apply knowledge of state and national content standards • Knowledge of Department of Education and DC Public School Standards and curriculum • Develop Individual Academic Plans (IAP) for each program participant using teacher observations, interaction with teachers, school records, alternative assessments and appropriate standardized test scores • Develop follow-up activities to strengthen skills identified in IAP and meet regularly with students to set new goals. • Maintain accurate academic records and monthly database reporting for each student. • Coordinate homework assistance and tutoring support for students including identifying external educational services for referrals. Find creative ways to ensure that homework help and tutoring activities are punctuated by other intervening activities of a social, recreational or a cultural nature. • Support parental involvement and understanding of the instructional program • Lead collaboration between school curriculum and Carrera components • Guide ATA instructional staff on opportunities to integrate school principles and component themes into their educational curriculum, activities, and learning space • Guide Carrera team on opportunities to integrate school’s educational curriculum and standards into component themes, lessons, and activities • Participate in teacher and leadership staff meetings on individual progress and challenges for each student. • Work creatively with school instructional staff and other educational partners to establish a well-balanced program that fits the needs of the young people in a school setting. • Keep abreast of new developments in the curriculum through readings, conferences and other means of gathering training and knowledge, and disseminating information to staff on a regular basis

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Degree in Education.
• Special consideration will be given to those applicants with a strong background in literacy coaching and reading, writing, and language arts instruction. • Applicants must be responsible, dependable and have minimum of 2 to 5 years working with middle school youth in educational setting. Must be comfortable creating and delivering fun educational programs. • Strong ability to make subject engaging for youth of all ability levels. In touch with popular youth culture. • Position requires good organizational and planning skills, high creativity and the ability to work with minimum supervision. • Knowledge of Department of Education and DC Public School Standards and curriculum
