Position Description for PT Employment Specialist (Individual Contract Position)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation and the Children’s Aid Society Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program are partnering to deliver an exciting and innovative program to help youth from high-risk settings develop the desire for a productive future by avoiding pregnancy and making responsible decisions. The DC Carrera Trust Program includes (7) fundamental components: Education; Employment; Self-Expression; Lifetime Individual Sports; Family Life and Sexuality Education; Mental Health; and Medical and Dental Care. This program will work with 6th grade students after school and on Saturdays, and will follow these young people through to high school graduation and beyond.

JOB DESCRIPTION: A key function of the Employment Specialist is to teach fifth and sixth grade students about the world of work and careers, develop basic work-related skills, learn principles behind banking and savings and participate in business activities that will expose them to elements of entrepreneurship and earning potential. Activities may include career exploration opportunities, learning the principles of banking and managing savings accounts, role playing proper etiquette for job interviews, and learning skills and responsibilities expected in the working world. This position reports to the Program Coordinator, and works in conjunction with DC Carrera Trust and school staff, as well as the Regional Children’s Aid Society team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Conduct weekly structured learning experiences about the world of work and careers. Teach basic work-related skills and principles behind banking and savings using an approved curriculum for middle school.  Demonstrated ability to work with students of a variety of abilities, including those with special needs and low skill levels in a heterogeneously grouped classroom setting;  Proven ability to work well with families and community members;  Organize business activities that will expose teens to elements of entrepreneurship, small business ownership and earning potential; conduct ongoing group entrepreneurial activities during the program year that teaches teens about entrepreneurship and small business ownership.  Keep accurate records of attendance for the purpose of providing stipends connected with participation in Job Club.  When appropriate, develop community service activities and entrepreneurial/ stipend related activities. Develop internships and job shadowing opportunities.  Keep precise records of entrepreneurial expenses, profits, deposits and withdrawals. Work with others at the agency to establish an account at a local savings institution to manage money generated through various business projects and have regularly scheduled bank account reviews.  Arrange for visits to job fairs, industry visits and other such activities which will expose young people to concrete employment opportunities.  Collaborate with other component staff on opportunities that reinforce learning associated with the employment component.  Develop monthly calendar of activities that include upcoming entrepreneurial projects, bank trips and special activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor degree in Business or other related field.  Experience teaching middle school population; familiarity with teaching an employment curriculum to middle and high school population.  Superior engagement skills with youth and parents, strong communication (oral and written), organizational, and inter-personal skills.  Preferred qualifications include candidates with experience working in a school-based setting, and/or classroom experience.  Experience working in neighborhood/community-based programs.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday/Wednesday/Friday - 7:45am-11:00am onsite Minimum 10 hours offsite outreach, administration and lesson planning expected.

CONTRACT HOURLY RATE: Commensurate with experience
