Position Description for Full-time Community Organizer
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation and the Children’s Aid Society Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program are partnering to deliver an exciting and innovative program to help youth from high-risk settings develop the desire for a productive future by avoiding pregnancy and making responsible decisions. The DC Carrera Trust Program includes (7) fundamental components: Education; Employment; Self-Expression; Lifetime Individual Sports; Family Life and Sexuality Education; Mental Health; and Medical and Dental Care. This program will work with 6th grade students after school and on Saturdays, and will follow these young people through to high school graduation and beyond.
JOB DESCRIPTION: The primary function of the Community Organizer is to establish and maintain strong connections with young people and their families to facilitate long-term participation and engagement in the DC Carrera Trust program. The Community Organizer develops and implements strategies to encourage communication and strengthen relationships between youth, their parents and families, and the communities in which they live. This position reports to the Program Coordinator, and works in conjunction with the DC Carrera Trust program staff. This person will also work in tandem with Baltimore/DC CAS-Carrera Regional Implementation Center (RIC), which provides on-going technical assistance, training, supervision, and support to the full complement of DC Carrera Trust program staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Work with the Program Coordinator and DC Carrera Trust staff to ensure the fidelity of the program model - all (7) components and program philosophy. - Maintain caring daily contact with the youth, keep daily attendance logs, and engage and assist young people who are unable to participate in a group setting during program time. Outreach to youth not in attendance and conduct home visits when necessary. - Maintain and update student information and files on electronic database on a daily basis - Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing program schedules with innovative and engaging program activities. Ensures program space is conducive for high quality rotations and that competent leaders have required resources. - Work effectively with parents and key stakeholders in the community. Play critical role in developing and implementing a successful parent program. - Identify resources and work with local community agencies and institutions as needed to resource program and youth needs. - Provides supervision to part-time Group Leaders - Oversee daily programming when Program Coordinator is absent. - Participate in training and professional development opportunities offered through CAS-Carrera national and regional offices.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Strong knowledge of the local community and insight into community leadership, composition, networks, and resources. - Superior engagement skills with youth and parents, strong communication (oral and written), organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills. - Significant direct service experience with young people (ages 10-18). - Preferred qualifications include candidates with experience working in youth development or after-school programs. - Bachelors degree in human services or related field preferred. - Experience with staff supervision and support
SALARY: Salary commensurate with experience.
