Apply to Serve as a 2009-2010 Literacy*Americorps Member
Are you looking for an opportunity to work with D.C. residents who lack the literacy or other skills they need to get a good job, take part in civic affairs, read to their children, or access information about their health, safety or legal rights? Do you know someone in your community who is looking for such an opportunity?
D.C. LEARNs is currently accepting applications for Literacy*AmeriCorps Member positions for the 2009-2010 service year. This is a terrific opportunity for adults of all ages and backgrounds who have a passion for volunteer service and education. Members are placed in non-profits in the Washington, D.C. area to teach and tutor adults in basic literacy skills and English as a Second Language, assist with volunteer recruitment and training, and provide program and administrative support.
D.C. LEARNs works with adult and family literacy programs here in the District to raise public awareness of literacy issues, recruit volunteers, provide outreach to new learners, and provide the materials, research, training, and technical assistance needed to raise the quality of literacy services available in the District. What is unique about our Literacy*AmeriCorps program is that it is tightly integrated with the services provided by D.C. LEARN and its coalition members.
During the 11 months of service (August 24, 2009 - July 31, 2010), a Literacy*AmeriCorps member receives a living allowance up to $11,400, depending on length of service, payable in bi-weekly allotments. Members also receive an education award of $4,725 from the Corporation for National and Community Service upon completing 1700 hours of service. Health insurance and student loan deferment are also available. All D.C. LEARNs Literacy*Americorps members also receive comprehensive training on core teaching skills provided through our Adult Education Professional Development Center, as well as opportunities to attend other enrichment activities and an annual conference held by our Americorps oversight organization, the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council.
